Caulking is one of those steps that seems like a pain after youve spent dayshours replacing baseboards, windows, or trim BUT it can make such a huge difference in your space. Its so often overlooked or skipped to save timemoney have you ever seen a rental with caulked trim but it makes the whole room look finished.Case in point this little section of baseboard somehow got missed when we did the rest of the house when we moved in.We refinished the floors, replaced doors, windows, painted walls, and put in new trim.We were eager to get moved in to say the least. This one little stub wall has lasted ALL YEAR without being touched.Embarrassing, right Just keepingitreal with you If your window and door casingstrim havent been caulked, I encourage you to try it out Im almost positive youll be thrilled with the results.Caulking inside different levels of trim when its all being painted the same colour is the best place to start. Before I dig in, a little bit of background for you.Silicone strictly speaking of the name, is a non water soluble, super stinky product that plumbers use around sinks and tubs. Its usually clear and is meant to create a water tight seal. You cant paint over it or the paint would bead up and looks terrible. It dries but stay cushiony and rubbery which is great for keeping water out of areas that expand and contract with heat and cold often like a shower.Caulk is a different product, although the words get used interchangeably all the time like I do in the video I just couldnt help myself.Caulk dries harder and many types are paintable. Its meant more for finishing. The caulk that I use is actually caulk plus silicone so it still has a bit of flexibility. The added silicone keeps the caulk from getting too hard and cracking. This is the stuff I get I buy a bulk box at Home Depot if youre doing a whole house, it will save you some cash is also paintable and good for indooroutdoor use.Theres 1. 00 different types of caulk and silicone products out there.I also use a grout silicone to finish off my tiling jobs which can be found in the tiling section and a clear silicone to seal along countertops and the drywall. They all are used with the same technique they just react a little bit differently. So Ive created this little video for you sharing the basic tips that I found to be helpful when I started using a caulking gun, because it can be an intimidating task The first time I tried it I was so frustrated I couldnt figure out how to get it to stop coming out, I made such a mess. After caulking one room, I had a system down.It just takes some time and maybe a bit of wine to relax.Im not a pro by any means, but in this house Im the one that gets called when we need silicone or caulking done and Im darn proud of that So with the disclaimer that Im not a pro, lets get to the video I should tell you that I did paint the baseboard after that video did you see how dingy it was, but the caulking process that you saw there filled the nail holes, corners, and top gap.Its not a perfect process, but it works. When you get going, you really get into a groove and it goes quickly.I always like to start in a section of the room thats less visible, like behind a door or in a closet just in case it takes me a minute to get going. So lets talk about some more options tips.Taping is a great idea until you are comfortable with a caulking gun.Just tape both the wall and the baseboard, leaving a small gap for your silicone.Smooth it before you peel back the tape to see a nice crisp line.I stopped taping after the second bedroom in our house because I would have been spending all.BUT if youre only doing one room or maybe just one window taping will help you get a nice straight line.Your caulking gun will really affect the way you work, especially if you are doing a large space. When we first bought one, we bought the cheapest gun we could find but it killed my hand.It broke after a couple bedrooms and we upgraded to the second cheapest gun and it has made a world of differenceJust keep that in mind when youre buying.I use my finger and a smooth damp rag to apply silicone and caulk. If youre not into that I get it, it does kill your fingers. My family swears by a caulking applicator like this one that can be used to get a nice corner instead of your finger.Just drag it along as you would your rag or finger.Im all about efficiency also known as impatient so pulling this out every time I needed to smooth a line was too finicky for me.The caulk I use takes two hours to dry thats if you have a nice thin line.Ive filled gaps that are a bit deeper, so they take longer to dry.Make sure your silicone is completely dry before painting to avoid pulling it up.Professional painters will push the caulking gun along the baseboard, but most of us will find it easier to pull or drag the caulking gun along, using the tip to smooth it as we go.Find out what works for you and go with that.I hope this has helped you feel a little less intimidated by caulking When we started the finishing at our house last year I was completely lost, I dont know why I found it so scary but Im thinking Im not the only one.Let me know if you have any questions and hopefully Cassity and I can get you some answers Again, this is just what Ive learned in the past year, Im sure theres tons more tips and tricks and specifications that you could find if you searched really hard.See more from Colleen over at Lemon.Thistle. Im the DIY and lifestyle blogger behind Lemon Thistle home to DIY, hand lettering, home dcor and design.Im a mom to three kids under three, I love to entertain, and my awesome hubby and I are working our way through major renovations on our new home.I believe you can have a beautiful life, home, and party without spending a lot.How I paint walls Shanty 2 Chic.Happy Monday guysHave you all thawed out I hope so To keep up with all of our projects from start to finish, be sure to follow us on Instagram Many of you know I recently started redoing my baby sons room.I have been debating his wall color for a few weeks. His room has been a very light blue color that I did when we first moved in our house for his big sister.I have no touchup paint, and couldnt remember the name of the color, so repainting the whole thing was my solution.I went to Ashleys new house last week and fell in LOVE with some of the wall colors. My favorite was called Seine by Valspar, and I immediately knew I wanted it for Brooks room. So, I sent the kids off to school last Tuesday and got to work.I didnt start taping off until around noon, and I had the whole thing painted and put back together by 8 0.That included picking the kids up and cooking dinner. For those of you that are intimidated by painting walls and the time it may take, hopefully I can help you out Here are some tips that help me get it done quickly First, here is a before shot of the room.Dont be fooled. That is a pretty blue color, but what you dont see are the multiple dings and doodles thank you children on the wall.It was time for a changeCute bed, huh I made it.HERE is the tutorial and link to the free plans I start by moving everything away from the wall, and taping it all off. Now, if you have ever been down the painters tape aisle at the hardware store, you have probably seen the 4,5.I havent tried them all, but I have put many to the test.I have had the best luck with this stuff. Its Scotch Blue with Edge Lock. The Edge Lock did cost a dollar or two more, but I feel like I really see the difference in the lines once I pull it off the wall.I start in small sections like this and work my way around the entire room.Next, I fill all of my nail holes on the wall.My favorite product to use for this is 3.Ms Patch and Primer.I LOVE this stuff You just use a small putty knife or scraping tool like this one to go over your hole and thats it.Let it dry for a bit and you are ready for paint.Works perfect for me every time.I also remove all of my switch plates from the wall.If you are uncomfortable doing this you can just tape them off, but I find this much easier. It does expose the wiring, so be careful not to touch anything inside the holes.I cover each switch with tape like thisI also use a piece of tape to hold the screws on the plate so I dont lose them My first step is always cutting in Or at least thats what I call it I use my very favorite roller for this part, and I had this part done in under 2.Its the Wooster Jumbo Koter and it works with the pole I show you below.I also used my Wooster Pelicanbucket to hold the paint on this part.I shared this tool on Instagram, and I think you guys love it as much as I do.I love that it has removable trays to keep me from cleaning anything up Probably my favorite thing about it It also holds your roller to keep it from going into the paint. So smart and so awesome. You can find it on Amazon HERE Here are some progress shots of my cutting in Now, I will always have some really small spaces where my roller wont get. They look a bit like thisI just use a small brush like this one to get all of those small spaces before rolling the rest of the wall.I like to put these in a small plastic baggie and put them in the freezer after I am done painting. They are great to go back and do small touch ups once you get the room put back together. The freezer keeps the paint from drying out.The fridge works too, but I can keep mine longer in the freezerNow to roll the big part This was my first time using this type of roller and OMG.Its amazing to me that there can be such a difference in rollers. This one is called the Wooster Sherlockand I used the 2 4 pole since I was only painting 8 walls. My favorite thing about the Sherlocksystem is how it attaches to the pole Normally, with other brands, you have to spin the roller onto the pole. These always break for me over time, and they are a pain in the rear to get on.This one just clicks on with the press of a button.Genius This was a huge plus when I was finished and needed to take the roller off.The tray I used was also a huge time saver. It has great plastic liners that stick in place and again NO MESS after you are doneMy final step was rolling all of the unpainted walls.I used two coats of paint on the walls.I bought 2 gallons of paint, but only ended up using about 23 of one.Love that Now I need to find something else to paint Seine. Here are a few finished shots of the great color Isnt it such a great color I love how it makes the trim pop And again guys With the right tools you can have a job done so much faster. Its just like power tools.I hope I have convinced you to overcome your painting fearsBe sure to ask me any questions here that you may have Thanks so much for stopping by Cant wait to show you guys some other fun projects I am doing in hereWhitney.
